Overview
Lake Nakuru is small enough to cover properly in two days and dense enough that you rarely drive long between sightings. It is fenced, which has made it one of Kenya's most important rhino sanctuaries — both black and white rhino live here in numbers you will not match elsewhere on a short trip.
It is also the easiest park to reach from Nairobi on this list, which makes it a good first or last stop, and a sensible choice if long transfers are a problem for anyone in your group.
- Both black and white rhino, in a fenced sanctuary
- Rothschild's giraffe, found in only a handful of places
- Leopard, regularly seen in the acacia woodland
- Flamingos and pelicans when lake levels suit them
Day by day
-
Day 1 Nairobi to Lake Nakuru
Leave Nairobi in the morning and drop into the Rift Valley, reaching the lodge in time for lunch. An afternoon game drive takes in the lake shore and the woodland where the leopards sit.
-
Day 2 A full day at Nakuru
Out before breakfast, which is when leopard are most often found here, then back to the lodge to eat. The afternoon drive works the rhino country and the lake edge, with Rothschild's giraffe through the yellow-barked acacias.
-
Day 3 Lake Nakuru to Nairobi
A last early game drive, breakfast at the lodge, then the drive back up out of the valley to Nairobi.
