What Kenya’s park fees actually cost in 2026

Park fees are the single biggest surprise in most safari budgets, and the reason two quotes for what looks like the same trip can differ by hundreds of dollars. Here is what they cost in 2026, who sets them, and why we quote them as their own line rather than folding them into a headline price.

Two different systems

Kenya’s protected areas are not run by one body. National parks — Amboseli, Lake Nakuru, Tsavo East and West, Nairobi — are run by the Kenya Wildlife Service. The Masai Mara is not a national park. It is a national reserve managed by Narok County, which sets its own fees on its own schedule. Conservancies like Ol Pejeta and Lewa set theirs independently again.

That is why fee news about “Kenya” often does not apply to the park you are actually visiting.

KWS parks in 2026

KWS moved to a four-tier system on 1 October 2025, charging different rates for East African citizens, Kenyan residents, other African citizens and non-residents. For non-resident adults in 2026:

  • Amboseli and Lake Nakuru — about US$90 per person per 24 hours.
  • Tsavo East, Tsavo West and Nairobi National Park — about US$80 per person per 24 hours.

Two practical notes. The KWS ticket runs for 24 hours, so an afternoon arrival and a morning drive the next day can fall inside one ticket if the timing is handled properly. And KWS fees are now paid online — there is no cash payment at the gate — which is one of the things your operator should be handling for you.

The Masai Mara in 2026

Narok County confirmed two rates for 2026:

  • 1 January to 30 June 2026 — US$100 per non-resident adult, per day.
  • From 1 July 2026 — US$200 per non-resident adult, per day.
  • Children — US$50 per day, and under-8s enter free.

The Mara ticket is not a 24-hour ticket. It runs 6am to 6pm, twelve hours, and a night in the reserve means paying for the second day. This catches people out constantly.

Read those two rates again, because the difference is the whole planning decision: a family of four spending three days in the Mara pays US$1,200 in fees in June and US$2,400 in August, for exactly the same trip. That is not the operator’s margin. None of it reaches us.

Why we quote fees separately

Because they are not ours, they change without notice, and burying them makes it impossible for you to compare quotes honestly. An operator who folds fees into one big number can look cheaper simply by assuming a low-season rate, or by planning a route that clips a park for two hours rather than a day.

Every quote we send lists the fees line by line, at the rate that applies on your dates, so you can see exactly what goes to the parks and what goes to the safari.

What the money does

Entry fees fund rangers, anti-poaching patrols, fences, roads and the community agreements that keep land under wildlife rather than under wheat. The rates sting, particularly the Mara’s peak season figure, but the alternative to paid conservation land is not free conservation land — it is farmland.

How to keep the fee bill sensible

  • Travel in the shoulder. The Mara’s June rate is half the July rate for much the same wildlife.
  • Use conservancies. Ol Pejeta and Lewa charge less than the Mara in peak season, are far quieter, and allow walking and night drives that the national parks do not.
  • Go north. Samburu gives you five species you cannot see in the Mara at all.
  • Count nights properly. Ask any operator to show you the fee calculation per day. If they cannot, that tells you something.

Rates checked September 2026. Fees are set by the parks and counties and do change — we confirm the current figure on every quote.
