Overview
This is the trip for people who do not want to spend four days sitting in a vehicle. You stay at a ranch house below Mount Longonot and go out from it each day: onto Lake Naivasha by boat, up the volcano on foot, through Hell's Gate on a bicycle or horse, or further afield for a full day of game viewing.
It suits families, groups who want different things from the same holiday, and anyone combining a safari with time to actually stop. It is also a gentle introduction for first-timers, being under two hours from Nairobi.
- A boat cruise on Lake Naivasha, among hippo and fish eagles
- Hell's Gate, one of the few parks you may walk and cycle in
- The option of climbing Mount Longonot's crater rim
- A full day's game drive to Lake Nakuru or the Aberdares
Day by day
-
Day 1 Nairobi to Longonot Ranch House
Collected from the airport or your hotel and driven down the escarpment into the Rift Valley, with the Longonot crater ahead of you. Settle in at the house and take the afternoon at your own pace.
-
Day 2 Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate
A morning boat cruise on Naivasha, an hour and a half among hippo, pelicans and fish eagles, or the climb up Longonot if you would rather be walking. In the afternoon, ride or walk into Hell's Gate between the red cliffs.
-
Day 3 A full day out
A long day by vehicle with a picnic lunch, either north to Lake Nakuru for rhino and flamingos, or east up into the Aberdare range through the Mutubio gate, where the country turns to moorland and forest.
-
Day 4 Back to Nairobi
Breakfast at the house, then the road back up to Nairobi, or a transfer to the airstrip if you are flying on.
