Overview
Lewa is a working conservancy on the northern slopes of Mount Kenya and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It carries a significant share of Kenya's black rhino and around a tenth of the world's Grevy's zebra, on 62,000 acres with very few vehicles on it.
What sets it apart is how you see it. Game viewing here is not only from a seat: open-vehicle drives by day and after dark, walking with a professional tracker, and horse or camel rides where the ground suits. Numbers are capped, so the conservancy is quiet in a way the national parks are not.
- Tracking rhino on foot with a professional guide
- Grevy's zebra, the rarest zebra species, in numbers
- Night drives, which national parks do not permit
- Very few vehicles: the conservancy caps its own visitors
Day by day
-
Day 1 Nairobi to Lewa
Drive north around the shoulder of Mount Kenya to the conservancy, arriving for lunch. An afternoon drive to get your bearings, with rhino usually on the plains before dusk.
-
Day 2 A full day at Lewa
Game viewing in every mode the conservancy allows: an open vehicle at first light, on foot with a tracker once the sun is up, and out again after dark if you want the night drive. Grevy's zebra, both rhino species, elephant and the big cats are all resident.
-
Day 3 Lewa to Nairobi
Breakfast at camp, a last look around the conservancy on the way out, then the drive south, reaching Nairobi in time for lunch.
