Overview
Samburu is the other Kenya: red earth, doum palms along the Ewaso Ng'iro river, and heat that arrives early. Because the country is dry, animals come to the water, which makes game viewing here more about waiting in the right place than driving far.
The draw is the northern specials — reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, beisa oryx, gerenuk and the blue-legged Somali ostrich. None of the five live in southern Kenya, so a few days here adds species no amount of time in the Mara will.

Day by day

Day 1 Nairobi to Samburu
North out of Nairobi past Mount Kenya, with the landscape drying out as you go. Reach camp for lunch, then an afternoon drive along the river where the elephants come down to drink.

Day 2 A full day in Samburu
Coffee on the veranda watching the river, then out early for the best of the light. A long morning drive after elephant, lion and leopard, the hot hours back at camp, and out again in the late afternoon for the Special Five.

Day 3 Samburu to Nairobi
A last early game drive while the air is still cool, breakfast at camp, then the drive south to Nairobi, arriving in the afternoon.
