Overview
Most Kenyan safaris start and end in Nairobi. This one starts in Mombasa, which makes it the obvious choice if you are already on the coast, or if you want to fly into one city and out of the other without backtracking.
In a week you cross five parks and a lot of country: the red earth of Tsavo East, the springs and lava of Tsavo West, Amboseli under Kilimanjaro, the rhino and flamingos of Nakuru, and three nights that finish in the Masai Mara. It is a camping-level price for a route that usually costs considerably more.
- Five parks in one week, from the coast to the Mara
- Mzima Springs in Tsavo West, with its underwater hippo viewing
- Amboseli's elephants below Kilimanjaro
- Ends in the Masai Mara with a full day in the reserve
Day by day
-
Day 1 Mombasa to Tsavo East
Leave the coast in the morning and drive north into Tsavo East, Kenya's largest park, where the elephants are famously red from the dust they throw over themselves. Afternoon game drive.
-
Day 2 Tsavo East to Tsavo West
An early game drive before breakfast, then west across the highway into Tsavo West, which is greener, hillier and volcanic. Lunch at camp and an afternoon drive.
-
Day 3 Tsavo West to Amboseli
A morning drive taking in Mzima Springs, where fifty million gallons a day come out of the lava and you can watch hippo and crocodile through an underwater window. Then on to Amboseli for the evening.
-
Day 4 Amboseli to Lake Nakuru
Up early for the mountain before the cloud builds, then the long leg north past Nairobi and down into the Rift Valley. Picnic lunch on the way, and a game drive at Nakuru on arrival.
-
Day 5 Nakuru to the Masai Mara
South-west through the Rift Valley to the Mara, with a picnic lunch en route. Camp set up in time for an afternoon game drive in the reserve.
-
Day 6 A full day in the Mara
The whole day in the reserve, which is what the previous five days have been building towards: lion, cheetah, leopard and, between July and October, the migrating herds.
-
Day 7 Masai Mara to Nairobi
Breakfast at camp, then the road north-east to Nairobi with a picnic on the way, arriving late afternoon.
